Poetry Contest

The 2009 Poetry Contest is upon us.  We’ve moved up the contest from 4th quarter to 2nd quarter so as to coincide with Book Month’s Put a Poem in Your Pocket.  I am a great lover of poetry.  I was a part of the Stinky Bagels poetry club at university and even compiled a book of my own poetry for my wife as Christmas gift, before she was my wife.  Hopefully, you’ll consider entering one of your own original poems in the contest.

Rules:

  • Each student may enter only one poem for the entire contest.
  • Poems may be written on any subject as long as it does not contain any inappropriate language or material.
  • Poems must be 20 lines or less.
  • There are four categories that the poem must fit within:
    • English (any subject)
    • Korean (any subject)
    • Bahasa Indonesia (any subject)
    • English (a poem that specifically conveys a Christian message or principle)
  • All poems are due to Mr. Brammer by December 1st. The winners will be announced the week of December 14th.

Judging Criteria:

  • Poems will be judged by a panel of House students and leaders, for each category.  i.e., the panel judging the Korean poems will be Korean themselves.
  • Each poem will be judged asking these questions:
    • Does the poem employ literary devices in a meaningful way?
    • Does the poem use language in an interesting way?
    • Does the poem have an evident structure?
